A New Year is a Upon Us……..

Great News! Southern Dental Associates is expanding our service menu!

Recently, our doctors along with our hygienists, attended a continuing education class.  As health care providers, we strive to stay up to date and knowledgeable , bringing our patients the latest and most advanced care we can, whether it’s new technology or simply re-introducing services into our menu of care.

Our latest CE course touched on many awesome aspects of your dental visit. One that we are very excited to share is the re-introduction of fluoride to our adults patients.

As many of you know, our children generally receive a fluoride treatment at every 6 month check up. Fluoride is often called “nature’s cavity fighter”  and for good reason. Fluoride, a naturally-occurring mineral, helps prevent cavities  in children and adults by making the outer surface of your teeth (enamel) more resistant to the acid attacks that cause tooth decay.

How Does Fluoride Protect Teeth?

Fluoride benefits both children and adults. Here’s how:

Before teeth break through the gums, the fluoride taken in from foods, beverages and dietary supplements makes tooth enamel (the hard surface of the tooth) stronger, making it easier to resist tooth decay. This provides what is called a “systemic” benefit.

After teeth erupt, fluoride helps rebuild (remineralize) weakened tooth enamel and reverses early signs of tooth decay. When you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, or use other fluoride dental products, the fluoride is applied to the surface of your teeth. This provides what is called a “topical” benefit.

In addition, the fluoride you take in from foods and beverages continues to provide a topical benefit because it becomes part of your saliva, constantly bathing the teeth with tiny amounts of fluoride that help rebuild weakened tooth enamel.

We are excited to now offer a fluoride varnish to all of our adult patients at each recare. Varnish is an awesome way to receive fluoride. It is applied at the end of your visit with a small brush by either your doctor or hygienist. They varnish adheres to your teeth for a few hours but the benefits continue to work almost until you’ve returned to your next recare!!!  You can eat and drink immediately upon leaving. We only ask that you refrain from brushing until that evening before bedtime.

We look forward to seeing you at your next recare in 2017! Great things are coming! Stay tuned!!!
